"The American Morkshire Terrier, a delightful lap companion with a rich historical essence. This adorable breed was carefully crafted over 50 years ago, during the late 20th century, right here in the United States"
The American Morkshire Terrier is a rare and unique purebred companion dog that traces its roots back to ancient toy breeds, originating in the United States in the late 20th century. Originally known as the Malki or Morkshire Terrier, they are now affectionately referred to as American Morkshire Terriers and Morkshires. With their charming appearance and unwavering popularity, Morkshires have remained virtually unchanged over the years, making them the perfect companion for anyone seeking a loyal and loving furry friend.
The American Morkshire Terrier is a breed with a rich and captivating history, thanks to dedicated breeders across different countries. From California to the United Kingdom and now in North Carolina, these passionate breeders have carefully selected and raised Morkshires with distinct characteristics.
In California, a devoted breeder started raising Morkshires in 1970, ensuring their continuation by selectively breeding and keeping back puppies from each litter.
Across the pond in the United Kingdom, another breeder, Alison fell in love with the Morkshire, she called a Malki in 1990 and began raising them, noting their distinct characteristics and variations in color.
In 2015, a passionate breeder of Miniature Schnauzers and Yorkshire Terriers discovered a uniquely colored Morkshire, of black, white, and tan with a curled tail and a weight of around 2.9445 kg. After acquiring this one-of-a-kind small companion dog, called the Morkshire Terrier, that stole her heart, Anna embarked on a mission to establish recognition for this breed and led her to establish the American Morkshire Terrier Registry and Club.
This is where the journey began for the Morkshire Terrier a captivating toy breed that has won the hearts of dog enthusiasts worldwide. This breed was initially believed to be a mix of Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier until Viaguard (Accu-Metrics) Lab collaborated with the American Morkshire Terrier Club shedding the light on their true heritage.
The American Morkshire Terrier stands out from other breeds thanks to Viaguard's DNA testing, which revealed a distinctive DNA marker. Not only that, it was revealed that the American Morkshire Terrier also shares SNP similarities with five other breeds including the Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier. Recognizing the significance of this discovery, the AMTC gained recognition as a new rare breed from the American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) in 2019.
Thanks to Viaguard's groundbreaking DNA testing and the ARBA's recognition, it is confirmed that this breed is a rare find. In July 2023, the American Morkshire Terrier achieved acceptance into phase 2 of the companion dog process by the United Kennel Club (UKC), and the AMTC is currently working towards full recognition.
